In vegetable tanning, the hides are tanned in the pit as in the traditional process. This process is also known as tanning and red tanning. This process is particularly environmentally friendly because no toxic chemical additives are used. In vegetable tanning, extracts from plant parts of various woods and barks (e.g. oak, chestnut, quebracho) are used to obtain the tanning bark. The vegetable tanning agents are ground in the tanning mill and processed into a brew. In many places, names such as Lohmühle, Lohwald or Lohmüller still remind us of this traditional method of tanning. The traditional vegetable tanning process in the pit can take up to 12 months. For this reason, in modern vegetable tanning, the rawhide is often pre-tanned with synthetic tanning agents and then tanned in rotating vegetable-based tanning barrels. This means that the tanning process can be shortened to just a few days.
At LANIUS we only use vegetable tanned leather for our products, which are manufactured in an environmentally friendly manner and are free from harmful residues.
